Discover the history of the Moorish castle in Sintra!
When you're in Lisbon, you'll be tempted to spend the day in Sintra, to discover the many palaces and jewels this part of the region has to offer. Don't miss the Moorish castle, of particular importance in Portugal's history.
Built in the 8th century, when Sintra was occupied by the Moors, the castle saw many battles and crusades, and was successively conquered and lost by the Christian kings of the time. It wasn't until the 12th century that the first king of Portugal conquered the castle forever. The castle was last restored in 1940.
During your visit, be sure to follow the walls to the top of the hill overlooked by the Moorish castle. The tour also offers a unique view of Sintra's cultural landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
