Just 30 minutes from Reykjavik, explore the Raufarhólshellir lava cave!
You will be picked up in Reykjavik and driven to the lava tunnel site, located about 30 minutes from the city center. Upon arrival, you will meet your guide, who will provide you with a helmet and headlamp.
You will then enter one of the largest lava tunnels in Iceland. You’ll learn how, over 5,000 years ago, a volcanic eruption formed this long underground tube, which is now nearly 30 meters wide and up to 10 meters high.
During the guided tour, you’ll explore different sections of the tunnel: walls with striking mineral colors, hollows and cavities, occasional lava stalactites, and in winter, impressive ice formations.
Your guide will explain the geology of the site, the formation of the tunnel, and show you less accessible areas. You’ll walk on installed pathways and occasionally uneven ground, immersing yourself in a “hidden world” beneath the Icelandic surface. Some stairs or gentle slopes may be present.
At the end of the tour, you’ll be driven back to Reykjavik.
