Description

Discover the remains of Petra, a thousand-year-old city classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the seventh wonder of the world, as well as Little Petra!

Petra, capital of the Nabataean Empire from 400 to 106 BCE, is full of archaeological sites, each more impressive than the last. The entrance to the city is unusual as you can only discover Petra by crossing the Sîq, a long path amidst the ochre and red canyon walls measuring several tens of metres high. Throughout your visit, your guide will focus on how the Nabataeans carved the rock, and you will learn how they survived the harsh conditions of the desert.

From Amman, you will be driven to Petra by air-conditioned vehicle.  Once you arrive in Petra, you will have the opportunity to take a quick horseback ride.

Your tour will start with a crossing of the Sîq (gorge). This path will lead you to the most famous site in Jordan: Al-Khazneh. This monument, which is called "Pharaoh's Treasury" in Arabic, is 43 metres high and 28 metres wide. It is said to have been built around the 1st century CE by the Nabataeans to hide the supposed treasure of a pharaoh. As you continue across the Sîq, you will discover the Urn Tomb and the Byzantine Church, as well as the imposing Petra theatre, built over 2,000 years ago.

Afterwards, take a short break to explore the surroundings freely. If time permits, you can visit the Petra Museum.

On the way back to Amman, you will pass through Little Petra. Little Petra is so named because the site has strong similarities with the thousand-year-old city of Petra, located a few kilometres away. Archaeologists and historians agree that Little Petra was mainly a place of exchange and trade for merchants from the Arabian Peninsula, India and Europe.

You will be driven back to your hotel in Amman at the end of the day.
