Description

Explore Alice Springs Desert Park, see its rare animal and plant species and learn more about the Aborigines!

Desert Park is a nature reserve located a few kilometres from Alice Springs and covers nearly 1,300 hectares. Marvel at its diverse range of birds, reptiles and mammals that inhabit the region and are very difficult to spot in the wild.

You can also learn more about the history and culture of the Arrernte indigenous Australians, who live on the outskirts of Alice Springs.

The park is divided into three different zones for you to visit:

  • Desert Rivers: there, you will find cockatoos, fish and other reptiles that inhabit the almost-dry riverbeds of this habitat area.

  • Sand Country: there, you will see kangaroos, emus and a diverse range of lizards.

  • Nocturnal House: This is a greenhouse and is home to animals that would be hard to see in the wild. You can see bilbies (also called macrotis), marsupial moles and even spinifex hopping mice, an Australian rodent. In the evening, other species are visible, such as snakes, lizards and even the hare-wallaby (mala).

It is advised to visit the park at the end of the day, just before sunset, so that you can enjoy all the park has to offer! Audio guides are available for free in several languages.
